New to Windsor?
All are welcome here
Whether you’ve moved to Windsor for work or wanted a change of scenery, we love Windsor, and we would love you to join our church family.
Moving to another town, county or country isn’t always easy - we’ve shared some information below to help you settle into your new home.
Practical basics
Windsor sits within the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, and many public services run through their website.
-
Registering to vote is worth doing early. Being on the electoral roll also affects things like credit checks, so it’s easy to overlook until it causes a problem. Register to vote via gov.uk
-
Register with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead (RBWM) as soon as you have a moving date, so your bill starts on time and you’re not caught out later. Visit RBWM Council Tax website
-
Schools admissions for the Royal Borough are handled through Achieving for Children on RBWM’s behalf. You apply through your home address, even for a school outside the borough boundary, so it’s worth starting early if term is approaching. Visit RBWM/AFC School Admissions website
-
Anyone in England can register with an NHS General Practitioner (GP) surgery. You don’t need proof of address or immigration status, just your name, date of birth and address. Visit NHS Find A GP service
-
Whether it’s trash, garbage or rubbish - the same rules apply! Collection days vary by street, so it’s worth checking yours in the first week rather than guessing. Visit RBWM Bin Collection website
Recycling in the Royal Borough is straightforward - of course, one of our most famous locals, King Charles III, has been an ardent advocate of the practice for over 40 years! Find out which items go in which wheelie bin here
Someone nicked your wheelie bin? Sadly it’s been known to happen. Order replacements with RBWM here
-
As with anywhere else, life doesn’t always go to plan and it’s not always clear how to navigate public services or know your rights. Citizens Advice Bureau for East Berkshire offers legal and practical advice across a variety of challenges.
-
Windsor has a number of private gyms and sporting facilities - but some of the best places to work out are cheaper:
WIndsor Leisure Centre offers swimming, gym classes and racquet sports
Windsor Canoe Club offers kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding with a friendly crowd. In the view of our webmaster, their monthly beginners “try it” sessions are brilliant! (Pre-booking essential)
Windsor Cycle Hub offers a warm welcome to cyclists (any ability)
-
Windsor Library is very close to Peascod Street in the town centre, is free to join and a genuinely great way to meet people locally - especially if you have young children. Join RBWM Libraries
-
Fed up of social media? We have you covered. Venture away from the main tourist thoroughfares and you’ll find Windsor residents are warm, gregarious people.
At Windsor Methodist Church, we’d love to meet you and help you settle into our vibrant family - we are continually working towards being more equitable, more inclusive and more welcoming. We held Windsor’s first same-sex church wedding in July 2023 and take social justice seriously. You can find out more about the Methodist Church’s Strategy for Justice, Dignity and Inclusionhere.)
If we’re not for you, there are local churches of all denominations and none - the Churches Together in Windsor website is a great place to look.
Why not try out an evening course at Windsor College or event at The Old Court? Or, for anything else, the I Love Windsor directory is comprehensive.
